Danube, St. Stephen's Cathedral, Mozart

Vienna is located in the north-east part of Austria and is its capital. Not far from Bratislava, only 50km and 40km form Slovakia.
The Romans settled a military camp in this place around 100 a.d. Called Vindobona as a protection of the near town Carnuntum. Later also citizens came to town, the emperor Marco Aurelio died in this town probably sick because of the plague. Today it is still possible to see the ancient walls built between the years 100 and 500, and it's nice to notice how the modern structure of the city still have the same ancient structure.
As it was very exposed to the east, the city was later attacked several times by numerous peoples that tried to penetrate Europe, such as Byzantine, Lombards, Slavic.
Later in the Middle ages Vienna was under the Hapsburg control while a few centuries later it had to face Napoleon.
Vienna is today structured as rings, the inner one is the historic centre, once the walls of the town. The second ring known as “belt” (Gürtel) is today the most run road with a lot of traffic.
The city is crossed by the river Danube where it was built an artificial island to prevent floods.
Vienna's climate is continental but milder than other zones in Austria.
Anyway winter is long and cold with a lot of snow. Summer is mild and sometimes worm with frequent rain. The annual average temperature is around 10°C.
The visitors of Vienna can enjoy this beautiful city visiting many places, churches, museums, theatres and parks.
Here are some of the most known attractions:
Amongst the palaces it's worth to visit the imperial palaces of the Hofburg and Schönbrunn (also home to the world's oldest zoo, Tiergarten Schönbrunn) and the Riesenrad in the Prater.
There are also a choice of more than 100 art museums, the most popular ones are Albertina, Belvedere, Leopold Museum in the Museumsquartier, KunstHausWien, BA-CA Kunstforum, the twin Kunsthistorisches Museum and Naturhistorisches Museum, and the Technisches Museum Wien.
The most famous churches of Vienna are St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Deutschordenskirche, the Jesuitenkirche, the Karlskirche, the Peterskirche, Maria am Gestade, the Minoritenkirche, the Ruprechtskirche, the Schottenkirche and the Votivkirche.
Many popular attractions are associated with composers who lived in Vienna including Beethoven. Mozart has a memorial grave at the Hapsburg gardens and at St. Marx cemetery (where his grave was lost).
More modern attractions are the Hundertwasserhaus, the United Nations headquarters and the view from the Donauturm.
