Venice
Venice is the capital of the region Veneto, in the north-east of Italy. Its population counts around 62.000 inhabitants. Venice is also known as the queen of the Adriatic Sea, or the town of the waters, or town of the bridges because of its characteristic geographical position and structure, unique in the world.
The city is set on many little islands of the Venice lagoon, along the Adriatic coast between the outfall of the river Sile, about 50km far from the Po Delta.
In the past the republic of Venice was an important maritime power and a florid commercial area, especially concerning trading in silk, grain or spices.
Venice had also a great importance in art as it gave a determinant contribution to the art of the renaissance.
The city of Venice is worldwide known for its canals, it is built on a archipelago composed of 118 islands and about 150 canals that pass through the whole lagoon and are used by pedestrians.
The islands of the lagoon are linked by a net of about 400 bridges where it's only possible to walk, in fact the only transportation means allowed in Venice are boats and on foot.
The characteristic boat of Venice ids the Gondola, but today it is only used by tourists, or in special events such as weddings. The majority of the inhabitants of Venice use motorizes boats that are a sort of water-bus, but they also own private boats. In some points of the Grand Canal not served by bridges you can use a ferry to get to the other side of the canal.
Venice is not only a beautiful city because of its particular structure, it also has different attractive spots, first of all the St Mark Square where you can find the St Mark Cathedral.
To be visited also the Palazzo Ducale built in the IX century, the Grand Canal and a variety of bridges among which the most famous Rio Alto bridge.
If you look for art places, you can enjoy the Modern art National Gallery and the Museo del Settecento Veneziano.
