Lisbona is the biggest town of Portugal and it is its capital city,. It is located on the river Tago and is the modern expression of an European city rich of history and culture.
The origins of Lisbon are about the Phoenicians era in the very old times, later it was under the Roman domination and then it was conquered by the Arabs until the XII century.
The city faces the Atlantic ocean, for this reason many men called "conquistadores" left with the purpose of conquering the Americas and India. In 1755 Lisbon was hit by a very strong earthquake that destroyed the majority of the city, after that it was restored in a more modern and regular structure.
In Lisbon you can enjoy a lot of interesting sites such as the area known as Alfama, the only witness of what is left of the old city before it was destroyed by the earthquake.
Don't forget to visit the St. George castle too, it lies on the ruins of the old acropolis, in the earth of Alfama. For a relaxing moment the city offers the Edoardo VII park, the biggest green area of the city. Besides you can visit the Belèm tower, built on a side of the river Tago, a lovely jewel of art and a good spot to enjoy a panoramic view.
In the san Girolamo monastery in a splendid architecture are conserved the rests of many important Portuguese men such as Vasco de Gama.
Among the other attractions of the city there is the botanic garden, the Cristo Rei and the lovely palaces of the centre many of which decorated with the characteristic azulejos.
If you look for museums, in Lisbon you can find the Azulejos museum, that contains a collection of majolicas, the Gulbenkian museum with a number of works collected in the XX century by the politician Caluste Gulbenkian and the museum of ancient art where you can find masterpieces from Portuguese and international art.
Lisbon faces the ocean and this influences its climate that is worm and mild all over the year with a moderately hot summer and not too cold winters.
