Hamburg is located at the outfall of the river Elba, in the northern part of Germany and it is the capital of its region. The city has an older part, called Altstad, which is more interesting and attracts many tourists, and a more modern. Hamburg is the second city of Germany, with 1.700.000 inhabitants, only Berlin is more populated than Hamburg which has a key role in the national and European context.
Hamburg’s weather is typically continental, with cold winters and rainy summers. The best season to visit Hamburg is probably spring, though the city is an interesting centre all over the year.
Hamburg is not a new city, its origins are in the XII century and today is the main port of the Country and the most important industrial, economic and cultural centre of Germany.
Like in all the northern part of the country , living in Hamburg might be quite expensive for tourists but has a lot of interesting sites.
Binnenalster is among the best sites of Hamburg , with the beautiful fountain of Alster around which you find the Jugfernstieg, the most elegant area of the city.
The Deichtorplatz is located east of the old city, near this square you can find several attractions such as the famous building Chilehaus or the Decorative arts museum which is the main museum in Hamburg. Here you can also find the Kunsthalle.
Rathausmarkt is the heart of the old city, the Rathaus (the municipal building) is very nice. Around it you can find the old stock exchange building and St Peter Cathedral.
Hamburg’s port is probably the most characteristic area of the city, it is developped around the Speicherstadt, whit building set on the edges of the canals. In the same area there is the grat bridge Kohlbrand which is the new symbol of the city.
The new city is on the west part, it is the new heart of Hamburg. Here you can visit St Michael church, which is the main one, and the Planten und Blomen park, a botanic treasure in the city.
Among the other destinations you can visit the San Pauli quarter, located in the Altona area, just outside Hamburg and known for its electric style of life and the Reeperbahn, the red light quarter.
