Berlin
Berlin, whose name probably comes from the Slavic word berl that means wetland, is the capital of Germany and it's located in the west side of the country 70km far from Poland.
Berlin has about 3,5 million inhabitants, one of the most populated cities of Europe and is important for some European political, economic and scientific matters.
This city was probably born as a Slavic commercial site in the XII century as two separate towns: Berlin and Cölln which joined together in 1307. There's not much left of that period because of the chain of events that went on the city especially in the last century. Berlin was the capital of the Nazist Germany and it has been the target of many bombings during the second world war and in 1961 the government of the eastern Germany built a wall that split the city and the whole Germany into two countries. The wall was destroyed in 1989 after the fall of the communist regime, the country joined again into a single state and Berlin was again the capital of the unified Germany.
The city of Berlin was destroyed during the second World War and later completely rebuilt so it looks like a modern city today. The “Island of museums” is the most important area of museums, here we find the Altes Museum, which is the oldest one, the Neues Museum which is being repairing, the Alte Nationalgalerie that contains art works from the XIX century while in the Bodemuseum we find works from the Roman and Byzantine era. Another famous one is the Pergamon Museum that hosts the Pergamon Altar, and more collections of Greek and Islamic art. Another important cultural centre is the Bauhaus an art and architecture school with a large archive.
The cathedral of Berlin is in the northern part of the city, it's called Berliner Dom or Berlin Cathedral and was built between the 1895 and the 1905.
Berlin is also rich of theartre such as the Berliner Sinfonie Orchester Theatre with one of the most famous orchestras of the world.
For nature's lover Berlin offers parks and forests some of which are very big.
The climates of Berlin is temperate, the warmest months are June, July and August while December, January and February are the coldest ones. The weather is actually very variable with hot summers and very cold winters.
