Athens

Athens is the capital city of Greece and lies on a plain in the centre of the region called Attica. This city has a historical importance either for Greece and for the whole modern world, as it was the first town with a democratic government ever.
Today its population counts of about 745.000 inhabitants, with a metropolitan area with about 3.800.000 people.
Athens' climate is typically Mediterranean with hot, dry and sunny summers and mild winters and not rainy.
The modern urban area has 2 main centres: Platia Omonias and Platia Sintagmatos.
On the Venizelou street that links the 2 squares you can find the catholic cathedral, the science academy , the university and national library. Buildings with a neoclassical style made in the XIX century.
Moving south from the two squares we'll find the heart of the classic Athens: the acropolis, the most famous archaeological site of the city where you can appreciate the fascinating Parthenon built under Pericles in 432 b.C. This building is surely the most symbolic building of Greece.
More important works in the acropolis are the Erechtheum, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Kerameikos, the Teseion, the arch of Adrian, Dionysiou Aeropagitou.
Going north of the acropolis we find the ancient Plaka neighbour and some buildings of the Roman and Byzantine age.
Important museums to be considered are the National Archaeological museum with an amazing collection of pieces from the ancient greek culture and art from prehistoric age to the Romans.
The Benaki museum and the Byzantine museum with a unique collection of sculptures, icons and mosaics of several ages.
In Athens took place the Olympic games for three times, the first time in 1896, then in 1906 and the third one recently in 2004.
Athens is one of the best places to be visited in Greece, as well as the whole region surrounding the city, a nice place to spend a holiday at every time of the year.
