Though Amsterdam is not the political headquarters of the Netherlands it is still its capital and surely the most famous city and attracts the largest number of tourists that move to Holland.
Amsterdam was, in the past, one of the most important site for the renaissance in Europe, in fact many buildings were built in the XVI and XVII centuries, known as the golden age.
The origin of Amsterdam is in the XIII century when it was a village of fishermen that settled near a dam on the river Amstel, the combination of the words dam and Amstel formed the name Amsterdam.
The citizens soon were involved in an intense commercial activity that is still very important today.
During the first world war the Netherlands was neutral but as the city was an important commercial centre of Europe still accused the slack of the European Economies. While during the second world was Amsterdam was invaded by the Germans in 1940 and took to the City about 100 000 Jewish, among them the famous Anna Frank.
